We at Pipejawood are passionate about making beautiful, handcrafted bowls that combine the classic elegance of epoxy resin with the classic beauty of wood. These are artistic creations rather than merely useful objects. By fusing cutting-edge resin designs with age-old carpentry methods, each bowl tells a unique tale. We make these masterpieces come to life in the following ways.
The first step is to choose the appropriate piece of wood. We deal with woods that are renowned for their rich textures and inherent charm, including walnut, plum, pear, cherry, oak, maple, and even olive wood. Every wood piece is different, with cracks, knots, and other flaws that give the final product personality. What makes bowls so unique is that no two are ever same.
After selecting the wood, we form it into a rough base and cut it to the appropriate size. The wood is then put into a mold so that the resin may be poured. Here's where the magic begins: the resin fills in any gaps or fissures in the wood, bringing out its inherent beauty and producing a smooth, striking pattern.
The creative process really comes to life with epoxy resin. To produce vivid, unique effects, we incorporate colors such as metallic tones, pearl whites, or ocean blues into the resin. In addition to adding strength and filling in any gaps, the resin balances the smoothness of resin with the inherent warmth of wood.
In order to ensure that the resin completely compliments the wood and highlights its best qualities, this phase is all about artistry.
Once the resin has been poured, the mold is put in a pressure pot and the pressure is raised to roughly 5 bars. By doing this, air bubbles are eliminated and the resin is better able to adhere to the wood. Depending on the kind of resin we're using, the bowl remains in the pressure cooker for about twenty-four hours.
After curing, the bowl is placed on a lathe and molded into its final shape. We meticulously polish each element to guarantee seamless and perfect transitions between wood and resin. The bowl really comes to life at this point.
Sanding and polishing are necessary when shaping is finished. To obtain a smooth surface, we begin by refining the surface using coarse sandpaper and then progressively go to finer grits. By the end, the resin shines like glass and the wood feels cozy and welcoming.
Depending on how the bowl will be used, we apply finishes for the finishing touch. A beeswax mixture for a gentle sheen, natural oils like Danish or Odie's oil, or even an additional layer of lacquer or resin for increased longevity are all possible options. Every finish is selected to bring out the bowl's beauty and guarantee that it will be ready for many years of use.
A bowl is thoroughly inspected before leaving our workshop. From the surface's smoothness to the ratio of wood to resin, we ensure that every aspect is ideal. Each bowl is a one-of-a-kind design that is ready to be the focal point of a home.
